What is a Class Action Lawsuit

In law, a class action or a representative action is a form of lawsuit where a large group of people collectively bring a claim to court. This form of collective lawsuit originated in the United States and is still predominately a US phenomenon, at least the US variant of it. However, in several European countries with civil law (as opposed to the English common law principle, which is used by US courts), changes have in recent years been made that allow consumer organisations to bring claims on behalf of large groups of consumers.

Some of the more famed class action lawsuits to date include:
-$11 billion sexual discrimination lawsuit against department store giant
-$5.2 billion punitive damages lawsuit against national oil company
-$206  billion litigation against tobacco companies
-$4.25 billion settlement in silicone breast implant class action suit
-$4.75 billion suit against diet drug manufacturer
-$1.5   billion judgement against natural gas company over price manipulation price manipulation
